Dabensley is a fun and lively seven year old from the village of Placement in Galette Chambon. He lives with his parents and little brother. His parents do not have a consistent form of income, so the family struggles to survive. They depend on the generosity of friends and family to feed their family. Dabensley is very smart but he has never been able to actually go to school. He borrows texts books from friends who are in school and has asked cousins to teach him to read. His parents want him to go to school because they can tell that he is very, very smart. They asked the school to test him to see what grade he would place in and he placed in the second grade. That is a big accomplishment since he has never been to school in his life and everything he knows is self-taught. Dabensley says that his favorite subject is mathematics and when he is not studying, he enjoys playing soccer with his friends. He doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up. He just simply wants to go to school.
