Jean Woodlor is a cheerful 10-year-old boy in the second grade at Maranatha School. He lives with his parents, three brothers, and two sisters. His family works hard to make ends meet, but life is a daily struggle as they try to provide for their large household.
Jean’s parents are vendors in the local market, where they sell cleaning supplies such as brushes, cleaning cloths, and small baggies of washing powder. These small portions are important for many families who can only afford enough soap to wash one or two loads of clothes at a time. While this business helps provide for their family, it is very difficult because Jean’s parents must travel to a distributor to restock their supplies, and along the way they face heavy illegal fees both going and coming. After all their expenses, they often earn only enough to feed their family.
Because of these hardships, Jean’s parents have asked for help through the sponsorship program so their children can have the opportunity to stay in school. Several of Jean’s siblings are also part of the sponsorship program, as the family deeply value education but cannot afford the cost on their own.
When Jean is not in school, he loves to play. He enjoys soccer, making toys out of wood, and playing with old bicycle tires, which children in Haiti often roll along with sticks as a favorite game. School is a place Jean enjoys, especially because it gives him the chance to learn and spend time with other children. Though he is still young and does not yet know what he wants to be when he grows up, he knows he wants the chance to keep going to school. Sponsorship would give Jean the opportunity to continue his education and help open doors for his future.
