Julisson is a hardworking 17-year-old student in the 7th grade at BGM High School. Although he is older than many of his classmates, Julisson has remained determined to pursue his education despite the many obstacles his family has faced. Like many families in Haiti, his parents have not been able to afford school fees for all of their children at once, so the children have often had to take turns attending school in order to learn to read and write.
Now that Julisson has reached the 7th grade, his parents are hopeful that sponsorship will allow him to continue through high school without interruption. Graduating from high school would be a remarkable achievement, as Julisson would become the first person in his family to do so.
Julisson lives in the village of Bonet and walks to school each day with a group of other high school students. The journey takes between 45 minutes to an hour each way. Classes run from noon until 5:30 in the evening, and students travel together for safety and support. His parents work as vendors in the local market, balancing the difficult demands of earning income while caring for their children. They work tirelessly to provide for their family, often bringing the younger children with them to the market while the others attend school.
When Julisson is not in school, he enjoys studying and works hard to catch up academically. He is so committed to his education that he hopes to advance quickly enough to possibly skip a grade. Spanish is his favorite subject, and he dreams of becoming a doctor one day so he can help care for others in his community. Sponsorship would give Julisson the opportunity to continue pursuing that dream and create a brighter future for himself and his family.
