Betchnaika is a bright and determined seven-year-old who is in the first grade at Maranatha School. She lives with her parents, three sisters, and two brothers in the village of Galette-Chambon. Her parents work hard as vendors in the local market, selling produce they grow in the small garden behind their home. They carefully tend crops like corn, beans, squash, and tomatoes throughout the year, relying on Haiti’s warm climate to provide for their family. However, flooding, drought, and the ongoing challenge of finding enough water often make it difficult to produce a good harvest. Even so, they faithfully take what they can grow to the market, earning just enough to put food on the table. Some days they return home with empty pockets, but they never stop working to care for their children.
Betchnaika loves learning and spends her free time studying because she is so thankful for the opportunity to attend school. Her favorite subject is Creole, and she dreams of becoming a kindergarten teacher one day because her own kindergarten teachers inspired her and helped her develop a love for learning.
Although her parents made tuition payments throughout the school year, devastating flooding in their village after January made it impossible for them to continue. Without a sponsor, Betchnaika will not be able to return to school this fall.
Your sponsorship would give Betchnaika the opportunity to continue her education, pursue her dream of becoming a teacher, and build a brighter future for herself and her family.
