Sixteen-year-old Stania lives in the village of Galette Chambon with her parents, four sisters, and one brother. Her parents are sharecroppers who work long, hard hours in the fields to provide for their family. Like many parents in Haiti, they have faced the heartbreaking challenge of not being able to afford school tuition for all their children at once. About four years ago, Stania had to stop attending school so that her younger siblings could have the opportunity to go.
Even though she’s been out of school, Stania has never stopped learning. She has continued to study on her own by borrowing her friends’ books and reviewing lessons at home. Her dedication and determination paid off—when she recently took her placement exam, she learned that she wasn’t far behind and was able to start school again in the ninth grade.
Stania is a bright and caring young woman who helps her parents take care of her siblings and still finds time to study. She enjoys taking short naps in the afternoon after working hard around the house. Her favorite subject is Spanish, and she dreams of one day studying in the Dominican Republic to become a nurse so she can help others and give back to her community.
