Six-year-old Guisnerson lives in the village of Galette Chambon with his parents, two sisters, and two brothers. He and his younger brother, Donskerry, are both hoping to find sponsorship so they can begin school together in kindergarten.
Their parents work long, demanding hours as sharecroppers on a large farm in the village. Because of this, Guisnerson and Donskerry often have to stay home alone for much of the day. Neighbors help watch over them and make sure they are fed when their parents are away, but it has been a very difficult situation for the family.
Guisnerson is a bright, curious little boy who loves to play with his brother and friends in the village. He especially enjoys counting and is eager to learn mathematics when he starts school. One day, he hopes to become a farmer like his father—but he knows that to have a better future, he needs an education. Sponsorship would give Guisnerson and his brother the opportunity to attend school and open the door to a brighter future for their family.
