DOUSELYNE is a bright and determined 11th-grade student at BGM High School. Born in October 2006, she lives in the rural village of Galette-Chambon with her parents, three sisters, and one brother. Life in the village has never been easy, but recent challenges have made things especially difficult for Douselyne and her family.

Her father works as a tap-tap driver—similar to a taxi driver—but instead of a car, he uses a motorcycle. Her mother is a vendor who sells household items to neighbors in the community. Unfortunately, with growing insecurity in the area, people are afraid to leave their homes. Those who do venture out often cannot afford to pay for transportation, so they walk. As a result, Douselyne’s father rarely finds passengers, and her mother struggles to sell anything. She hasn’t even been able to restock her supplies due to the dangers of traveling to the distribution center. These hardships have put a major financial strain on the family.

In the past, Douselyne was able to pay for her school tuition and has been deeply grateful for the opportunity to study. But now, with the family’s income almost gone, her parents are desperately looking for help to keep her in school. Douselyne is so close to the finish line—just two more grades before she can graduate.

Despite these difficulties, Douselyne remains hopeful. She enjoys simple things like eating, sleeping, going to church, and even the hard task of fetching water from the local well. Carrying a five-gallon bucket of water on her head for half a mile is no small feat, but she does it gladly to help her family.

At school, Douselyne’s favorite subject is economics, and she dreams of becoming a nurse. She has watched several of her friends graduate from BGM and move on to nursing school in Port-au-Prince, and they are now close to finishing their studies. Douselyne hopes to follow in their footsteps and one day serve her community as a nurse too.
