Emerson is a bright fourteen year old from the village of Bonet near Galette Chambon. He lives with his parents, three sisters, and four brothers. He and his family evacuated their home in Bonet when the gang attacked their village. They are living with family and trying to find a place of their own to live. They work as share croppers and sell the produce they are given in market. It has been extremely difficult to feed their family on what little they can make at market. They were able to pay a partial tuition payment to put Emerson in school when they came to Galette Chambon, but they will not be able to afford full tuition in the Fall. He will need a sponsor to continue. When Emerson is not in school, he loves to study his lessons. His favorite subject is Creole. When he grows up, he wants to become a doctor.
