Djenica is a bright 10-year-old girl who attends BGM Primary School and will be entering the second grade this fall. She lives in Galette Chambon with her parents and two older brothers. Her parents are vendors who sell vegetables grown in the large garden behind their home. By carefully rotating their crops throughout the year, they are able to provide fresh produce for the local market. However, traveling to market has become both dangerous and costly because of illegal road taxes that vendors are forced to pay. These added expenses have placed a heavy financial burden on the family, and although they have always worked hard to keep Djenica in school, they are now concerned they will not be able to afford her tuition this fall.
Djenica is an eager learner who loves to study. She enjoys borrowing her older brothers’ schoolbooks so she can learn ahead and stay at the top of her class. At home, she happily helps her mother by cleaning the house, washing clothes and dishes, and assisting with preparing meals after market days. Her favorite subject is mathematics, and she dreams of becoming a nurse so she can care for the many sick people in her village. She hopes one day to serve her community by working at the Hope Center Clinic. A sponsorship would give Djenica the opportunity to continue her education and pursue the dream of helping others through compassionate medical care.
