Likenley is a bright 9-year-old boy who attends Maranatha School and is in the second grade. He lives in Galette Chambon with his parents, three sisters, and two brothers. His parents are vendors in the local market, selling strong handmade ropes that his father carefully weaves from discarded plastic bags and other recyclable materials collected throughout the village. These durable ropes are used by local farmers to secure livestock and for many other everyday purposes. In recent years, Likenley’s father has struggled with arthritis, making it more difficult to produce the ropes as quickly as he once could. His wife helps him, and together they make enough ropes to sell whenever possible. Their income has been further reduced by illegal road taxes they must now pay each time they travel to and from the market, making it increasingly difficult to earn enough each day to feed their family and pay school tuition.
Likenley is an excellent student who loves to learn. When he is not in school, he enjoys studying and helping his father collect plastic materials from around the village to use in making ropes. His favorite subject is mathematics, and he dreams of becoming a math teacher one day. He hopes that by completing his education and becoming a teacher, he will be able to provide for his family and ease the burden on his father. A sponsorship would give Likenley the opportunity to continue his education and work toward a future where he can support both his family and his community.
