SONY is a joyful and curious three-year-old boy who lives in the small rural village of Bonette, near Galette-Chambon in Haiti. He is currently enrolled in the K1 program at BGM Preschool, where he has just begun his educational journey. Each morning, Sony, along with his siblings and friends, makes the long walk from Bonette to school. It’s not an easy trek, especially for little legs, but they start early, walking together as a group. The parents in the village take turns escorting the children, ensuring they get to school safely.
Sony lives in a bustling household with his parents, three sisters, and five brothers. His parents work hard to support the family by running a small roadside market stand near the main road to Ganthier. Unfortunately, due to ongoing civil unrest and roadblocks caused by gang activity, it has become increasingly difficult for them to keep their market open and earn a living. Many days, they’re forced to stay home, and with income drastically reduced, providing for eight children has become nearly impossible.
Several of Sony’s siblings are sponsored through the BGM Sponsorship program, which has been a tremendous help to the family. Now that Sony is old enough for school, his parents are hoping to find a sponsor for him as well. Sponsorship not only gives Sony access to an education but also ensures he receives meals at school—a significant relief for a family struggling to put food on the table. In fact, the children often take home part of their lunch to share with their parents at dinnertime.
Despite the hardships, Sony is a bright and happy child. He loves singing, playing with his friends, eating, and sleeping. His favorite school meal is beans, rice, and sauce—so much so that it’s often hard for him to stop eating and save some for later, but he tries his best. His favorite subject is writing. He takes great pride in learning to write his name, the alphabet, and small words. Education excites him because he knows it opens up a future of opportunities that his parents never had—neither of them were able to attend school beyond the sixth grade.
Sony dreams of becoming a doctor when he grows up. He understands that doctors in Haiti have stable jobs and the ability to support their families. More importantly, he wants to help care for his parents and others in his community—both by providing medical care and by contributing financially.
Though life is difficult, Sony and his family press on with determination and hope. With a little help, Sonny’s dreams can take root and grow into something powerful—for him, for his family, and for his village.
