Kerwens (Kerwens 3) is a bright and energetic 12-year-old boy in the first grade at Maranatha Primary School. He lives in the village of Gallet Chambon with his parents, six sisters, and three brothers. Because there are several children named Kerwens in our sponsorship program, he is identified as Kerwens 3.
Kerwens’ parents are hardworking farmers who cultivate a small garden behind their home. Throughout the year they grow crops that they take to the local market to sell in order to provide for their large family. In recent years, however, earning a living has become increasingly difficult. Traveling to market has become dangerous, and illegal road taxes have made transportation costs much higher. As a result, his parents fear they will not be able to afford Kerwens’ school tuition for the coming year.
Kerwens is eager to continue his education and hopes that a sponsor will make it possible for him to remain in school this fall. Outside the classroom, he enjoys attending book discussions organized by a local youth organization, where children read together and learn about good citizenship, their society, and the history of Haiti. His favorite subject is French, and he dreams of becoming a professor one day so he can teach and inspire students just as his own teachers have inspired him.
