BERSENDJIE is a bright and determined 14-year-old girl currently in the 8th grade at BGM High School. She lives with her parents and her two sisters in a rural community. Her parents work as sharecroppers on a local farm, earning a difficult living through hard physical labor. While they are allowed to keep a portion of the crops they harvest to sell at the market, their income is often not enough to provide consistent meals for the family, let alone cover school tuition.
Despite these challenges, Bersendjie remains dedicated to her education and works hard in school. She is especially gifted in social science, as she enjoys learning about history, civics, and the responsibilities of citizenship. Outside of school, Bersendjie participates in a local youth social club where students read books and gather to discuss important civic and historical issues in Haiti. She is one of the club’s regular lecturers and is known for her confidence and skill as a public speaker.
Bersendjie dreams of becoming a nurse one day so she can care for others and serve her community. With sponsorship, she will be able to continue her education and pursue the future she has worked so hard to build.
