Lourdenie is a bright eleven year old from the village of Nan Dal near Galette Chambon. She lives with her parents, one sister, and one brother. Her mother sells vegetables from their family garden in the local market and her father is a mason. When he can find work, he makes pretty good money, but they live about two hours walk from Galette Chambon, and it is hard for her father to find work. Because their income is not guaranteed, Lourdenie has not been able to consistently go to school. She loves school and her favorite subject is Kreyol. She enjoys cleaning pots and pans after her mother cooks. When she grows up, she wants to go to professional school to learn to cook and then open her own restaurant.
