Staina is a bright and energetic six year old from the village of Galette Chambon who lives with her mother, sister, and brother. Her mother is a share cropper on a farm in the village. She works long, hot hours in the sun to try to provide for her little family. Her husband was a farmer as well, but he died suddenly while working the garden last summer. Staina’s mother took over his work in the garden after he died in order to try to continue to feed her children. She doesn’t make much, and there are days when she cannot buy food for her children, but she tries. It would be easier for her if she didn’t have to take Staina into the garden with her each day. She would much rather her baby girl be learning and eating a hot meal every day than running around playing in the dirt with no hope of a better future. Staina cannot go to school, however, without a sponsorship. Staina enjoys playing with her siblings and friends in the village. She is most excited about learning French when she goes to school, and when she grows up, she wants to become a doctor.
