Malaika, also known as “Naika” is a bright nineteen year old girl from the village of Galette Chambon. She lives with her mother, three sisters, and one brother. Their father died two years ago of kidney failure. Her mother has no source of income, so she has been unable to send her children to school ever since their father died. Malaika’s youngest sister started school this year because she has a sponsor. Malaika loves to study French, so she practices reading French books all the time so that when she does find a sponsor she will be ready to jump back into school and do well. She wants to become a nurse one day and she would also like to learn how to drive a car.
**Malaika entered the sponsorship program back in 2021 but her family evacuated the village in 2023 because of gang activity near their home. Now Malaika is back in the village and wants to return to school. She will be in the 11th grade.

**Please note that each year, we depend on village volunteers whose understanding of the measuring process may create variations in accuracy. Often times, children do not know their age or birthday, and sometimes they measure smaller or larger because of illness. We do the best we can to give accurate updates, but there are cultural constraints that we cannot avoid. Also, these measurements were made in March of 2022. The child may or may not have promoted to the next grade by the 2022-2023 school year. Final exams had not been taken when the update was made.
