BERLAN is a sweet and hardworking 12-year-old girl from the village of Galette Chambon, Haiti. She attends Maranatha School and is currently in the third grade. Berlan has fallen behind in school because her family has not been able to afford to send all of their children to school at the same time. While three of her siblings have sponsors, Berlan has been out of school for the past three years, patiently waiting for her turn to return to the classroom.

This year, the principal of Maranatha School graciously allowed Berlan to begin school again, but she will not be able to continue next year unless she finds a sponsor. Her parents work as vendors in the local market, selling small household supplies and detergent packaged in small baggies so they are affordable for their customers. Despite their hard work, it is difficult for them to earn enough to meet all of their family’s needs.

While Berlan has been out of school, she has faithfully helped her mother with household chores and cared for her siblings while her parents work at the market. She enjoys studying and working around the house, but she is especially excited to be back in school. Mathematics is her favorite subject, and when she grows up, Berlan dreams of becoming a seamstress and hopes one day to make school uniforms for students like herself. A sponsor would give Berlan the opportunity to continue her education and pursue the future she dreams of.
