Miskerline is a precious three-year-old just beginning her journey at Maranatha School. While her smile brings joy to those around her, her family carries the weight of a great tragedy. A few years ago, seeking a way to provide for his wife and three children, Miskerline’s father made the difficult decision to attempt the journey to the United States to find work. Like many Haitians facing extreme poverty, he boarded a small, overcrowded boat to cross the Caribbean Sea. Tragically, the vessel capsized during the voyage, and he was among those who drowned. This is a heartbreakingly common reality in Haiti, where parents often risk everything in hopes of sending money back home to give their children a future.
Now a widow, Miskerline’s mother is left to raise three children alone in a very difficult economic climate. In 2025, the “polycrisis” in Haiti has made basic survival a daily battle. With food prices soaring and gang violence disrupting local trade, a single mother’s ability to earn an income is severely limited. Without the support of a father, the cost of school tuition, uniforms, and daily meals for Caroline is a burden the family cannot carry on their own.
Despite the hardships at home, Miskerline is a ray of sunshine. At three years old, she is just starting to discover the world around her. She is a social little girl who loves to play with her friends and has a natural talent for singing. She can often be heard humming songs she learns at school or in the village. In the classroom, she is curious and eager. Her favorite thing to do is color, and she takes great pride in her drawings. These early years at Maranatha School are critical for her development, providing her with the stability and joy she needs during such a vulnerable time for her family.
Even at her young age, Miskerline has a heart for helping others. When she grows up, she wants to become a nurse just like her aunt who is currently in university to become a nurse. Having seen the struggles of her community, she dreams of one day being able to heal people and provide care for those who have no one else to turn to.
