Amelika is a bright 13-year-old currently navigating the challenges of 9th grade. Her family has faced significant hardship over the last few years. Her father, who was the primary gardener for the family, tragically died in a road accident while traveling to the market. Now, her mother must manage the family’s livelihood alone as a market vendor. However, over the past four years, the roads to the market have become increasingly dangerous due to rampant gang activity. Without her husband to help navigate these risks, it is difficult for Amelika’s mother to earn enough to support five children and keep up with the tuition costs at BGM High School.
Despite the trauma of losing her father and the current instability in her village, Amelika is a standout student and a burgeoning leader. Her favorite subject is French, and she uses her communication skills to engage with her community. Amelika is an active member of a local village club composed of local leaders, BGM High School graduates, and current students. Together, they read books on Haitian history, politics, and social issues. Amelika is known for her confidence and intellect, often leading the group discussions and speaking before the gathering. Her ability to analyze complex topics and lead her peers shows a maturity far beyond her 13 years. While she has the heart of a leader, her goal is to serve her community through healthcare.
When she grows up, Amelika wants to become a nurse. She is determined to use her education to provide medical care to those in her village who, like her father, face the dangers of their environment every day. Amelika is at a pivotal point in her education. The “national exams” often occur at the end of 9th grade in Haiti, and your support ensures she can focus on her studies rather than the financial strain at home. By sponsoring Amelika, you are not just funding a student; you are supporting a future nurse and a community leader who is dedicated to the progress of Haiti.
