Eight-year-old Loukens lives in the village of Galette Chambon with his aunt, his sister, and his brother—who are actually his cousins. After the tragic loss of his parents in a motorcycle accident, his aunt welcomed him into her home and has been caring for him ever since.
Loukens’ aunt works hard as a vendor in the local market, but it has been very difficult to provide for her family. Many vendors are struggling, as it has become dangerous to travel the roads to town to buy supplies and bring them back to the village. Despite these challenges, she does her best to care for the children and keep them safe.
Loukens is a cheerful and kind boy who loves to sing and enjoys attending church with his aunt and cousins. He also loves playing with his friends in the village. If he is able to attend school, he believes his favorite subject will be Creole, and he dreams of one day becoming a doctor so that he can help others in need.
