Ritchamy is a smart thirteen year old from the village of Jacquet near Galette Chambon. She lives with her mother, three sisters, and brother. They evacuated their home in Jacquet when it was attacked and her father was killed. They moved in with friends in Galette Chambon until they can find somewhere else to live. What little money her mother had when they evacuated, she used to pay tuition to put Ritchamy in school because she didn’t want her to get any farther behind than she already is. There was not a school they could afford where they used to live, so Ritchamy taught herself how to read and write. Now that she is in BGM School, she is trying to catch up. She tested on the 1st grade level when she entered, but she is hoping to skip some grades as she learns. She is just happy to be in school. Her mother found work helping out on a local farm as a share cropper. She makes a little money and gets to keep some of the produce for her family. This has been the only way they could survive. When she’s not in school, Ritchamy enjoys studying and helping her mother in the garden. Her favorite subject in school is mathematics. When she grows up, she wants to become a professor.
