OLGUENS is a hard working, active nine year old from the area of Kagwo which is a part of Galette Chambon. He lives with his father, one sister, and one brother. His mother died while giving birth to his baby brother. Olguens’ father is a moto chauffeur in the village. He gives people rides from the base of the mountain, down the rock road, to the main road outside the village. He makes enough money to feed his three children, but it is not enough to send them to school, so he has to pay a neighbor to keep the children. The family grows a small garden behind their house so that they can have some vegetables to eat sometimes when food is scarce. It’s Olguens’ job to keep the garden going while his father works. Because Olguens is nine and he has never gone to school, he really needs to be in school so that he can learn to read and write and have a future. Elementary school starts at 7:30 am and is over at 1 pm, so Olguens is sure he can water the garden early in the morning and then return in the afternoon to tend it. He has to walk a long way with a 5 gallon bucket at 5:00 each morning to get water for the garden anyway. He says he can just use some of that water to bathe and get ready for school. He would love that. However, there is no way his father could pay the tuition or buy a uniform for him. He will have to have a sponsor. Olguens’ favorite thing to do in his free time is work the garden. He looks forward to learning how to speak French in school, and when he grows up he wants to become an Englineer.
