Akon is a 16-year-old young man in the eighth grade at BGM High School. He lives in the village of Galette Chambon with his parents and his three brothers.
Akon’s parents work hard as vendors, selling vegetables they grow in a small garden behind their home. In recent years, increasing insecurity in their area has made it too dangerous for Akon’s mother to travel to the local market while his father tends the garden. As a result, the family’s income has decreased significantly, making it very difficult to afford school tuition for their children. Although finances are a constant struggle, Akon’s parents are determined to see him complete his education and are praying for a sponsor who can help make that possible.
When he is not in school, Akon enjoys playing soccer with his friends. He dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, but he understands that opportunities for advanced training are not available near his village. Because of this, he has also set his heart on becoming a doctor so he can care for the people in his community. His favorite subject is social science because he believes that understanding his society will help him become a responsible citizen and better serve others in the future.
