Sophonie D. is a pretty and prissy little five year old from the area of Bayawon near Galette Chambon. She lives with her father and three sisters. Her father is a mason who helps build houses. He has not been able to find much work this year because of the violent chaos that has entered the village over the last year. He really needs to have his children in school not only to get an education, but also a hot meal every day and it gives him an opportunity to work some. He doesn’t feel like it is safe for his girls to stay at home by themselves when he goes to work. If they were all in school, he could go out and find work and not worry that his girls are in danger. Sophonie enjoys learning to read, going to church, and playing with friends. Her favorite subject in school is reading. When she grows up, she wants to become a nurse.
