IVANIA is a happy nine year old from the village of Galette Chambon who lives with her parents, four brothers, and one sister. If she is able to start school, she will start in the second grade. Her parents are farmers who sell their produce in market. It has been very difficult to make ends meet because of the dangers in the village and a broken economy. They want desperately for their children to go to school because that means their future will be more secure. However, they cannot afford tuition for school. They can’t send them to public school either because it’s too far away and they don’t have transportation available to them to take them every day. The only way they can go to school is if they are sponsored. Ivania enjoys going to the garden to help her parents, playing with friends, and learning new things. She loves to count and add and subtract, so she thinks that her favorite subject to learn is mathematics. When she grows up, she wants to become a nurse.
