Billy Love is a sweet and determined 13-year-old boy from the village of Galette-Chambon. He lives with his mother, five sisters, and two brothers. His mother works hard to care for her children, growing food in their garden to feed the family, but with no steady income, they rely heavily on the kindness of others just to survive.

Several of Billy Love’s siblings have sponsors, and his mother is so grateful that they are able to go to school. Sadly, Billy Love hasn’t been able to attend school for several years because she simply can’t afford the tuition. Billy Love’s favorite thing to do is help his mother in the garden—he knows it’s how his family gets by. When he was in school, his favorite subject was mathematics, and he dreams of one day becoming a professor.
