Samuel is a friendly eleven year old from the area of Plasman near Galette Chambon. He lives with his mother and he doesn’t have any siblings. His mother is uneducated and comes from an extremely poor family up in the mountains above Galette Chambon. She moved with her son down to the Galette Chambon area hoping to be able to find work so that she could support her child. She works as a share cropper and tries to sell some of the produce she gets from her work at the local market on weekends. Samuel is a very hard worker and he gets up very early before daylight to help his mother with chores then they are off to the garden to work. Samuel’s mother does not want him to end up in the same situation she is in though. She wants him to get an education so that he can find work that will support his family better when he becomes an adult. She just knows that there is no way she could pay his tuition. So she prays daily that he can get a sponsor. Samuel says that if he gets a sponsor, he would LOVE to go to school, and he work very hard to do well in school, but he would still go help him mother in the garden when he gets out of school because he doesn’t like knowing that she works so hard to take care of him. If he gets to go to school, Samuel looks forward to learning French because the educated people in Haiti speak French. When he grows up he wants to become a doctor so that he can take care of his mother.
