Birthday: FEBRUARY 14, 2014 Sponsorship #: 2023-00-090HC

Saul is a bright nine year old from the village of Gullette Chambon. He lives with his father and mother, three sisters, and eight brothers. His parents work as vendors in the local market. They also have a large garden behind their house and they sell the produce from that garden. It is really hard work for them because there is not a water source close to their house. Every day Saul and his brothers carry 5 gallon buckets to the local well or the river to fill up and take back to their house so that they can water the garden. Sometimes it rains, and this keeps them from having to go get so much water. However, sometimes there is drought, and the river doesn’t have much water, so they have to go further to get water from a well. It is really hard work, but they love helping their parents grow the garden so that they can make money at market. With 11 children in the family, working as farmers and vendors does not put much food on the table much less pay tuition. Thankfully, all of Saul’s brothers are sponsored in school. His sisters are not old enough for school. Right now, Saul is only in the first grade because he started school late. He did not have a sponsor, so he couldn’t go to school. This year, he is hoping that he will have a sponsor so that he can go to school like his brothers. Even though he will have to start in the first grade, Saul is sure that he can study hard and catch up. Saul enjoys working with his family, playing with friends, eating, and working in the garden. He looks forward to learning French when he goes to school because that is the language of the educated. When he grows up, he wants to become an engineer.
