Nolson is a determined 10 year-old who goes to BGM primary school. He is in the first grade because his parents have never been able to afford to send him to school. He lives with his parents and sister in an area of the village called Nandal in Galette Chambon. Nolson’s parents are vendors in the local market, but they have never been able to make very much money and have never been able to afford to send Nolson to school. This year, Nolson would like to be able to begin school so that he can learn to read and write. His parents have learned that when you don’t have an education, it is very hard to support a family. It is very important to them that their son go to school. If he is going to go to school, however, he must have a sponsor. When Nolson came to register for school, he took a test to see what grade he would need to start in. Nolson was able to write his name, but he could not write anything else or read. Nolson wants to learn how to read and write and do mathematics, and all of the other things that his friends can do who go to school. He enjoys playing with friends when they get home from school, practicing his writing, and sleeping. He thinks that his favorite subject in school will be writing. When he grows up, he would like to become a teacher.
