DABENS is a very bright seventeen year old from the village of “Barprond” near Galette Chambon. He lives with his adopted mother with his three sisters and four brothers. His mother adopted him and his siblings after their parents died. His mother is a share cropper who sells at market what produce she is allowed to keep so that she can buy food and other necessities for the family. Although she does make a little money, it is definitely not enough to support seven children in the house. Whenever they can, the older ones find odd jobs to do to help with support. As long as some of them are in school, they have a dependable food source because they can save some of their lunch from school to take home and share with others in the family. Because Dabens has finally made it to 10th grade, he sees graduation as attainable, so he is determined to stay in school and finish. Having a sponsor would guarantee that to happen. Dabens enjoys studying and learning and working on the farm and around the house. His favorite subject is Economics, and when he grows up, he wants to become a doctor.
