Alando is a spunky little four year old from the village of Galette Chambon. He lives with his father, sister, and brother. His father is a farmer and he works long, hot hours in the fields every day. Alando and his siblings are in charge of going to get water for the house every morning, fixing breakfast if they have any cornmeal at home to make, and getting their uniforms ready for school. Alando and his brother and sister don’t even see their father each day until after they get home from school and he returns from the garden. They don’t mind, however, because they know that their father works hard and it’s the only thing he has ever known to do. Although he works very hard, he doesn’t know how to read or write, so he has no other options. His father was a farmer too, and they didn’t have the money to send the children of the family to school, so farming has just always been their way to support the family.  In recent years, however, it has become more and more difficult to support a family through farming. Between droughts, hurricane flooding, and a country in total chaos, people are struggling to support themselves. Once again, going to school is a luxury many cannot afford. The only way Alando can go to school now is if he has a sponsor. He loves school and he knows that it will prepare him to have a better future. He’s not sure exactly what he wants to be when he grows up, but he thinks it might be cool to become a doctor.
