Christella is a gentle and quiet ten year old from the village of Galette Chambon who lives with her parents, eight sisters, and three brothers. The family has been farming as share croppers for at least four generations. Her father never went to school and neither did her grandfather. Her father says that he started working in the large corn and sugar cane farm as early as he could walk. Their large family has continued to make farming a family affair. That is the only way they can put food on the table to feed everyone. Unfortunately, this has required several of the children in the family to forego schooling as well like their father. However, the parents have tried to put a few of the sisters through school when they can. Christella is one that has managed to make it to the 5th grade. She absolutely loves school and does very well. She is very smart and she wants to one day study to become a doctor. She enjoys playing with friends, studying, working with her family in the garden, and going to church. Her favorite subject in school is mathematics.
