Phara is a fifteen year old girl who lives with her parents, five sisters, and three brothers in the village of Galette Chambon. Her parents work as local farmers. The farm corn, millet, and beans, depending on the season. They work very hard to make enough money to feed their large family, but it is not enough to send all of the children to school. Her other siblings are already sponsored, but Phara would also like a sponsor. One, it would help her parents knowing all of their children are able to go to school, and two, Phara wouldn’t feel so left out. Every day, her siblings get ready to go to school and are gone all morning. Phara sits at home because her parents can’t afford to pay her tuition. When her siblings get home, Phara borrows their books and they help her learn what they learned at school that day. She does the same homework that they do, only she doesn’t have a teacher to grade it. This makes her so sad, but she has faith that she will find a sponsor and when she does, she will be ready to enter a high enough grade that she won’t be so far behind. Phara’s favorite things to do are study and have school with her siblings. Her favorite subject is mathematics and when she grows up, she wants to become a nurse.
