Sonder is a cheerful 10-year-old boy who attends Maranatha School, where he is currently in the first grade. Although he is older than many of his classmates, his story is one of perseverance rather than ability. In 2023, Sonder was sponsored, but his family was forced to flee their home in the village of Galette-Chambon because of gang violence. They found refuge with relatives in another village where his parents were able to find work, but there was no nearby school for Sonder to attend. The closest school was nearly two hours away, and the daily cost of motorcycle transportation was far beyond what the family could afford.
Now that the family has safely returned to Galette-Chambon, Sonder is excited to be back in school. He lives with his parents, two sisters, and one brother. His parents work as vendors, but they struggle to earn enough to provide for the family and pay school tuition. Sonder loves learning and says his favorite thing to do outside of school is study. Mathematics is his favorite subject, and he dreams of becoming a professor one day, teaching mathematics at BGM High School. A sponsor would give Sonder the opportunity to continue his education this fall and pursue the bright future he has worked so hard to reclaim.

Often times, children do not know their age or birthday, and sometimes they measure smaller or larger because of illness. We do the best we can to give accurate updates, but there are cultural constraints that we cannot avoid. Also, these measurements were made in March of 2022. The child may or may not have promoted to the next grade by the 2022-2023 school year. Final exams had not been taken when the update was made. You can assume that the child will move on to the next grade up, but it is not guaranteed. Thank you for your understanding.
