Roseguerlie is a bright thirteen year old who lives in the village of Galette Chambon with her father, sister, and brother. Their mother died three years ago and their father has struggled ever since. Their grandparents try to help them make ends meet, but it is very difficult since their mother died because their father struggles with depression. He tries to work in the garden with his father, but there are many days he cannot work because of sickness that stems from depression. Roseguerlie tries to take care of her younger brother and sister as much as she can, but she also knows that she must work hard in school if she is going to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. She wants to one day be able to take care of people who are sick like her mother was and help give them hope of survival. She doesn’t want to have to worry about whether or not she will be able to go to school each year. If she has a sponsor, she can focus on her studies and helping her family.
