WESLEY SAM-LENSKY is a very smart three year old who lives with his young mother in the village of Galette Chambon. His mother was kicked out of the house when she became pregnant with him, so she found an abandoned shack in the back of the village to live in while trying to take care of her child on her own. To try to support herself and her child, his mother decided to become a vendor who goes throughout the village selling single-use washing powder in little baggies to families that need it to wash their clothes. She carries Wesley on her hip and the bucket of bagged washing powder pods on the other side. She barely makes enough money to feed the two of them each day because she only makes 5 goudes per bag which is the equivalent of 4 cents. There have been many days when all she had to eat were leaves that she gathers from the trees near her house and boils them over a tiny fire on the ground. She desperately needs for Wesley to go to school so that he can learn to read and write and she can know he is safe at school and getting a hot meal while she goes about selling washing powders. The only way he can go is if he has a sponsor. Wesley enjoys playing with children who live near him. There is a little boy close by who goes to school and he has taught Wesley his ABC’s and he has learned that loves to learn! He looks forward to going to school and using crayons to color beautiful pictures. When he grows up he wants to become a doctor!
