Guerline Jean-Risme is a 15 year old girl from the village of Galette Chambon. She lives with her parents and four brothers and one sister. The family owns a business of growing and selling plantains on the family farm. They make a decent living, but not enough to send all of the children to school. Guerline feels blessed that she has been able to go to school every year since she was 8 years old. She started late because her older brothers were in school and her parents could not afford to send her until two of them finished. She has worked hard every year though and she has made good grades. She really wants a sponsorship because she has younger siblings that need to go to school too and she doesn’t want them to have to wait as long as she did. Her favorite subject in school is math and she wants to become a nurse when she grows up. Her favorite thing to do is go to school. She doesn’t like it when school lets out for the summer because all she wants to do is learn. That is why she reads most of the summer.
