CHERLINE is a bright and determined 14-year-old girl from the village of Galette Chambon, Haiti. She attends Maranatha School and is currently in the third grade. Cherline lives with her parents, six sisters, and three brothers. Her parents are hardworking farmers who maintain a large farm as sharecroppers, earning a modest income by selling some of their produce at market. In recent years, however, unsafe conditions at the market and declining sales have made it extremely difficult for them to provide enough food for their family and pay school fees for all of their children.

Because of these challenges, Cherline has had to sit out of school for several years—a common reality for children in Haiti when families must choose which children they can afford to educate. Although a couple of her siblings are sponsored, Cherline is not. This year, the principal of Maranatha School graciously allowed her to return to school with the hope that she would find a sponsor. Cherline loves to study and has worked hard to learn on her own by borrowing friends’ books while she was out of school. Now back in the classroom, she is eager to catch up. Her favorite subject is social science, and she dreams of becoming a kindergarten teacher one day. A sponsor would make it possible for Cherline to continue her education and pursue the future she is working so hard to achieve.
