BERNADO is a bright and cheerful seven-year-old boy currently in the first grade at BGM Primary School. He was born in 2018 in the rural village of Galette-Chambon. Like many children in his community, Bernado does not have a recorded birthdate—his mother remembers only the year he was born. In Galette-Chambon, most women give birth at home, often returning to work the very next day due to a lack of health care services and financial hardship. There is no health care currently offered in the village.
Bernado lives with his single mother and two sisters. His mother works hard as a vendor, selling household items within the village. Unfortunately, she cannot afford to travel to the city to restock her goods, and the roads are too dangerous for her to travel alone. The local market is also very limited—most people in the village cannot afford to buy what she sells. As a result, her income has suffered greatly over the last two years.
Despite these challenges, Bernado remains full of life. He loves playing with his friends, helping his mother with chores, and getting plenty of rest. His favorite subject in school is mathematics, and he dreams of becoming a doctor one day so he can help others in need—perhaps even in his own village.
Bernardo’s mother has asked that he be added to the sponsorship program, in hopes of securing a brighter future for her son.
