MARCUS is a bright and energetic ten year old from the village of Galette Chambon. He lives with his aunt and two brothers who are actually cousins. He was taken in by his aunt when both of his parents died in a horrible accident coming down a mountain road on a charcoal truck when it capsized. His aunt is a vendor in the local market, but she struggles to feed her now three children, so it is important to her that they are in school so that they get an education and are fed daily. There are many nights when they all go to bed hungry because she could not afford to buy food to feed them at home. Sometimes Marcus and his cousins will take small bowls with them to school in their backpacks and when lunch is served, they will only eat half of it and save the rest to take home for dinner and to share with their mother. It is a very difficult life, but they are thankful that BGM has a school where they can go and be safe and learn and eat. Marcus will not be able to continue going to school, however, if he doesn’t get a sponsor. Marcus enjoys helping with work around the house and playing with friends. His favorite subject in school is mathematics. When he grows up, he wants to become a math professor.
