ISLANDE is a 15-year-old student in the eighth grade at BGM High School. She lives with her parents, her brother, and her sister. Both of her siblings are currently sponsored, but Islande is still waiting for the opportunity to receive support so she can continue her education.
Her parents are hardworking farmers who grow crops such as sugarcane, corn, and beans. In past years, her father would tend the fields while her mother would take their harvest to the market to sell. However, this past year has been especially difficult for the family, as her mother has been very ill and unable to help. As a result, her father now carries the full burden of both farming and selling the produce, all while trying to cover the family’s daily needs and mounting medical expenses.
At home, Islande does her best to support her family. She helps her father with work when she can and takes on many household responsibilities, especially cleaning and caring for the home while her mother is unwell. Despite these challenges, she remains committed to her education. Spanish is her favorite subject, and she enjoys learning and growing in school.
Islande dreams of becoming a nurse one day so she can care for others in need, just as she cares for her own family now. A sponsor would make it possible for her to stay in school during this difficult season and continue working toward her goals.
