WICHENET is a bright and motivated 10-year-old boy who has recently begun attending Maranatha School. After taking a placement test, he scored high enough to enter directly into the second grade, an impressive achievement for a child who has never previously been in school. He lives in the village of Galette Chambon with his parents, younger brother, and sister.
Wichenet’s parents work hard as vendors in the local market, but earning a stable income has become increasingly difficult. To restock their goods, they must travel by public transportation to Croix de Bouquet, a journey that is both dangerous and costly due to required fees along the route. In an effort to make ends meet, they have also tried growing a garden to sell produce, but with limited knowledge and resources, this has not yet been successful.
Although none of the children had ever attended school before, Wichenet’s parents made a great sacrifice to save enough money to send him for one year. As the oldest child, he was given this opportunity first, which is a common practice when families must make difficult choices about education. Unfortunately, they do not have the financial means to continue paying his tuition beyond this year.
Wichenet is an enthusiastic student who enjoys mathematics and shows strong potential in his studies. When he is not in school, he loves playing with his friends, going to church, and playing the drums. He dreams of becoming a teacher one day—specifically a math teacher—so he can help educate children in his community.
Sponsorship would provide Wichenet with the opportunity to continue his education and build on the strong start he has made. With support, he can pursue his dream and create a better future for himself and his family.
