BASTIEN is a bright and cheerful four-year-old who lives in the Galette-Chambon community with his parents and his six-year-old sister. He attends Maranatha Preschool, where he is part of the K-2 class.
Bastian’s parents work hard as vendors in the local market, but in recent times their livelihood has become increasingly difficult and dangerous. Gangs have set up tax checkpoints along the roads they must travel to reach both the market and their suppliers, making each trip risky. Because of these dangers, they are no longer able to take their children with them as they once did. Enrolling Bastian in preschool has allowed his parents to continue working while knowing he is in a safe and caring environment.
At home, Bastian loves spending time playing with his sister and neighborhood friends. At school, he especially enjoys singing songs as a way of learning new things. He is a joyful child with a big heart and big dreams—one day, Bastian hopes to become a doctor.
