Pelanda is a petite 14 year-old who goes to BGM Primary school and is in the sixth grade. Pelanda comes from the village of Boukandris, which is a small village up in the mountains above Gallette Chambon. She lives with her parents, three sisters, and four brothers. There is a large number of children from this village who get up before dawn every morning to walk to school. These children leave their homes at 4 o’clock in the morning so that they can make it to school in time. Pelanda is one of these children. Her parents are vendors in the local market. It has become extremely difficult to support the family and send the children to school with the recent downturn in the economy and the dangers in the streets. This is why Pelanda’s parents are asking that she be put in the sponsorship program. They know how important it is for their children to go to school and get an education. There are not many opportunities to make a living in their country if you don’t know how to read and write. Fernanda enjoys playing with friends, going to school, and studying her lessons. Her favorite subject in school is experimental science. When she grows up, she would like to become a nurse.
